Of course we'll also hit the hill on Elder Mill Rd that we love to hate before heading back into Watkinsville. No maps. Do this ride once and you should know it by heart. Ride leaves from behind the Watkinsville courthouse. No ride leader. Riders attending can modify the route to suit - very informal. Short option (16 miles) would be the short Antioch Church loop

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, MAY 17-18
7th ANNUAL ATHENS TO LAKE HARTWELL TOUR
Southern Bicycle League and Athens' Nitty Gritty Bike Band invite you to participate in the annual overnight tour from Athens to Lake Hartwell and back. You'll travel on mostly rural roads through scenic countryside and small Georgia towns. Each day's route is about 60 miles. This is a great ride to prepare for BRAG and other summer tours. All your gear will be transported to and from Lake Hartwell in a truck. There will be store stops in towns along the route both days, and a SAG vehicle will be on the route. Saturday night's stay and catered dinner will lakeside at Crescent Camp, directly on the shores of Lake Hartwell, just north of Hartwell Dam. This is a beautiful site on a promontory of the lake, with multiple individual campsites under the trees. Showers and restrooms are on site. Those who don't wish to camp can make motel reservations in the city of Hartwell. Sunday's route returns to Athens - most people arrive back at the starting point in the early to mid-afternoon. To ensure your food and camping arrangements, we need your registration by May 9 ( download a registration form ).
The ride start and overnight parking will be at Athens Technical College, 800 Hwy. 29 North, Athens, GA 30601, about a mile north of the Athens Perimeter Highway. From Atlanta, take Hwy. 316 to the exit for the Perimeter, (Hwy 10). If you pass Home Depot, you've gone too far. The perimeter loops around the south side of Athens, and becomes Hwy. 29. The college is about 3 miles past the Lexington Rd. exit on the right. Look for the big water tower. Please call ahead of time (not the morning of the ride) if you're not clear on directions to the start. Check-in will be at Athens Technical College on Saturday morning from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. Riders' meeting starts promptly at 8:00 a.m. Questions? Contact Mark Dodson - cyclehawk (at) mindspring.com or 706-540-9913.
